AROUND MY HOOD
Around my hood
Youngsters on scooters and rollerblades
Boys in football attire, geared for Pop Warner combat
Around my hood
Little girls imitating Ciara and Beyonce or even a “Dreamgirl” like Hudson
Slidin’ on concrete in sneakers with built-in wheels underneath
Double-dutch rituals and bubblegum poppin’, smackin’
Around my hood
During the day cats and dogs in everyday routine,
Squirrels scurrying across roads, sparrows tweeting,
Pigeons soaring like flying guillotines onto citizens
And seagulls scavenger hunting for outdoor meals
While at night raccoons, skunks and possums patrolling the city
Along with bats hovering across the evening
Around my hood
Vehicles of all types from classics to updated with shiny spinners
Bumping various tunes out their booming systems or ancient tape decks
I hear Reggaeton, I hear Nas, I hear Mary J.,
I hear Parliament, I hear Jim Jones ballin’
With volume level at its highest peak, strictly bass
Around my hood
Charlie Card access to public transportation
Bumblebee buses and a quadruple spectrum of subway lines
From peaceful and nearly empty to crowded and extremely noisy
Around my hood
Flames and Pepper Pot restaurants got my appetite feeling irie
The aroma of jerk chicken with jerk sauce and Jamaican patties, ya ‘ear me?
Around my hood
Grassroots poetry sessions for the intellect and consciousness
Addicts on a spoken word high in need of another fix of rhythm and rhyme
Around my hood
Seasons pay visits every three months
Mahogany/burnt orange leaves and Huxtable sweaters in the breeze
Snowballs flinging like crossfire and hard-working shovels digging
Pretty flowers rise from the dirt
With a flock of beautiful robins, cardinals and bluejays
Full court athleticism drum-beating Spauldings on its playing ground
Females in sunshine attractiveness, skirts and Apple Bottom jeans
As well as vendor Slushies of multiple flavors from the elderly woman
Around my hood
Parades of Haitians, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans
And nationalities of every fraction of the Diaspora
Around my hood
Film and theatre festivals for your cultural edutainment
Art galleries displaying African paintings, sculptures and such
Make a brother feel proud to be Black…RIGHT ON!
Around my hood
Purchases of Nubian Heritage soaps and lotion, strong enticing incense,
A container of smooth shea butter, small jars of scented oils,
RBG pins and buttons, knowledgeable literature,
Lectures, cinema and good music available on CDs and DVDs
And two scrumptious bean pies at A Nubian Notion and Tape Connection
From Dudley to Grove Hall…from Grove Hall to Dudley
Around my hood
Cricket tournaments on Franklin Field
Chess games on Talbot Avenue’s sidewalks
And spades at several backyard cookouts, sniffing that barbeque smoke
Around my hood
Homeless brothers and sisters requesting for handouts
And I say one dollar ain’t gonna hurt my pockets, would it?
Around my hood
Ciphers on street corners, discussions of importance
Reasonably safe arguments and loads of laughters
And possibly some old school harmony
Speaking of old school, around my hood
Entering retro parties at function halls
Mack suits and soul dresses, freakin’ and rockin’ Soul train style
Electric sliding and reminiscence of those jams
Big up Heatwave…big up Cameo…big up Ohio Players
Knee Deep, Heartbeat, Payback, Dazz, Brick House
Around my hood
Greetings of “yes sirs” and “yes ma’ams” flow from my lips
‘nuff respect due in a gentleman-like fashion
Giving up seats for seniors and pregnancy
Smiling at infants smiling back – dah dah dah dah!
Around my hood
Around my hood
Love, peace and happiness do exist
Just thought I put my views in pen and vocals
Let someone else recite or write about the flipside of my hood
